dan oara

For this project, I investigated a legend from my home country, Romania, known as the “ielele.” These feminine, mystical creatures, often described as “virgin fairies,” hold strange, uncanny seductive powers over men. The ielele gather in forests and lakes to bathe, commune and dance together, leaving the ground scorched where they have walked. By using this kind of legend, I am also able to explore the dynamics between men and women, as well as further exploring the male gaze upon the feminine. The legend itself depicts women who are dangerous and may send men into fits of madness, but in my interpretation, the audience are able to stare as long as they would like to.

While the ielele are a traditional Romanian legend, I chose to allow elements of the contemporary into my work, for example the modern clothes of the models. I wanted to allow elements of the twenty-first century Romanian identity to come through, bringing up questions as to what exactly is the identity of an Eastern European country which has only recently freed itself from dictatorship.

There is a struggle between past and present, which has been embodied by the clash of a peaceful, timeless landscape and its inhabitants, who are distinctly marked by their era. This struggle finds a parallel in Romanian culture, where young people are often caught between traditional upbringings and modern, Western influences. This relationship is something that I explore in my work through the semiotics of the space the work is created in – the locations display inherently Romanian features and symbols.

dan’s work

is focused around the tensions and relationships between two female characters. “Why are they together? Are they friends, family? Do they like each other? Why is she staring at her like that?” are all questions that you will ask yourself while viewing his work, yet the answers are forever concealed. Their gaze will haunt you long after you saw the images and the fact that your questions cannot find an answer will bring you back to Dan’s work, every time with a sense of wonder and curiosity.

How can we all be friends ?

The song that is stuck to your brain right now is…?

Hey – great blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a really nice platform you are using. I’m currently using WordPress for a few of my blogs but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?
