SERIES : Forest
Michael Lange: “The project WALD – Landscapes of Memory came into existence in the woods of Germany over the course of three years. The pictures are experiences of landscapes in twilight.Landscapes do not exist per se. They are created by the artist; only through his perception and his perspective in a multitude of elements like trees, shrubs, grass, moss, light and weather an image is created. In this living process the encounter and combination of the single elements is vital. Two levels are being brought into accord in the pictures – the experience of nature and deep, remembered landscapes. This project is determined by the question how silence can be depicted in an image – the photographs are the answers. The personal encounters with the landscapes are equally decisive. The photographs from the series WALD decelerate the beholder and give him peace. They create a connection with the inner space of silence. A silence that is always there, that everyone carries within himself; but which is usually cluttered with the constantly challenging demands and impressions of everyday life.”
that most of our vision is simply what our brain predicts, and only a little part of that is new element, or the tiny bits that our mind doesn’t recognize. This series proves that. Lange’s images transport you directly to that forest where you once were; where time stood still and sound didn’t exist; where solitude seemed to be the natural state. No eccentric, surprising new elements appear in these landscapes — instead, they are visual reminders of what we once were and what we now, as an urban society, have lost.
